Beginning with the 2016 edition, the JBR specifically monitors the compliance with the publishing and ethical standards. This is due to their increasing significance in international and especially European scholarly publishing and the increased exposure of journals to the agencies involved in tracking the so-called predatory journals.
The compliance with the following standards is monitored:
type |
label |
name and description |
Compliance with publishing standards |
DOI |
Assigning DOIs to papers: Is the journal indexed in CrossRef and does it assign DOIs to all papers available in an electronic format on a persistent URL?
|
DOAJ |
|
CC |
CC licenses: Does the journal display a Creative Commons license and does it act in accordance with the declared policies, i.e. does it have copyright and user policies, including a self-archiving policy?
|
Compliance with ethical standards |
Plag |
Compliance with the obligation to retract plagiarized papers: Does the journal use appropriate software to prevent plagiarism, i.e. does it check papers for plagiarism, verify the results of the check and, if necessary, retract the papers identified as containing plagiarism?
|
Ref |
Compliance with the obligation to list only legitimate citations: Are the reference lists in published papers limited only to the references cited in the text (body of the paper) and the selection of references is such that it does not affect the impact of the indicated journal, or other related journals, in a manipulative way?
|
The compliance with the basic European publishing standards (1–3) is determined based on the indexing in relevant international databases/services (CrossRef and DOAJ). Their application in the process of assigning journals to the tiers is shown in the corresponding table under Journal rating.
- Unrated journal. Monitored. Temporarily suspended due to non-compliance with publishing and/or ethical standards. Included in ranking.
- Unrated journal. Monitored. Permanently suspended due to the violation of publishing and/or ethical standards. Included in ranking.
