Classification into research fields

Journals are classified according to the fields of science, in order to ensure that the evaluation is based on comparing the journals of comparable bibliometric characteristics. The composition and the number of groups are adjusted to the number of journals currently published in individual fields of science. Two classifications of research fields are used: "administrative", used by the ministry responsible for science in the Government of the Republic of Serbia, and "bibliometric", based on the revised version of the OECD Frascati classification. Journals are ranked on indicators by the two classifications separately. Only the administrative classification is used to determine the tier. The allocation of journals into the tiers is performed according to administrative classification only.
The initial classification of journals into groups was carried out in 2003. It relied on the bibliometric procedure, based on volumes published in 2002 and earlier. The established classification was discussed, revised, and adopted by the competent bodies of the ministry responsible for science (expert committees) in 2003. Multidisciplinary journals were classified in several research fields, to be evaluated within each of them. In the meantime, with the inclusion of new journals, the composition of the groups changed. Journals were re-classified upon request of the publisher or the editorial board, but only due to changes in the subject and scope confirmed by the bibliometric procedure. Re-classification is done once a year. |
